CancerCare Manitoba is charged by an act of legislature of Manitoba with responsibility for cancer prevention, detection, care, research and education for the people of Manitoba. Dedicated to providing outstanding, comprehensive care, CancerCare Manitoba continually strives to improve the patient experience along the entire cancer journey.
CancerCare Manitoba Foundation sustains these efforts by raising funds to support CancerCare Manitoba’s multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals and internationally recognized researchers as they work together to deliver the best possible care and treatment for all Manitobans and their families living with cancer.
In 2005, the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation created The Bears on Broadway in celebration of CancerCare Manitoba’s 75th Anniversary and as a springboard for the "Bear" Facts – Reduce Your Cancer Risk social marketing campaign.
Joan Stephens has both volunteered and been employed in Manitoba’s thriving not-for-profit industry for more than 20 years, working at Contemporary Dancers, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Theatre Centre. She was MTC’s Director of Marketing and Communications from 1992 to 2005, when she joined the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation as Director of Education. As a volunteer, Joan has served on the United Way Cabinet, the West End Cultural Centre, Virtuosi Concerts, the U of M’s Career Mentorship program, and was a founding member of both the Winnipeg Cultural Alliance and Winnipeg Cares: An AIDS Benefit. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Brandon University – a degree that prepared her well for life in the not-for-profit world.
